Slowing Down

Goal Achievement

Why Slowing Down Can Help You Execute the Right Plan

High achievers are wired for action. We thrive on momentum. When something isn’t working, or we see an opportunity to make it better, we want to jump into planning mode. We focus on adjusting the cadence, redesigning the process, building the strategy.

And yet, execution without clarity is one of the most common mistakes I see among leaders and business owners.

Recently, I worked with a senior executive who wanted to revamp a leadership development program. Our instinct was to dive straight into structure: how often the group would meet, what topics they would cover, who should attend. But before locking in any of the logistics, we paused and asked:

What’s the purpose of this program?

What is the desired outcome?

That moment of clarity reshaped everything. It surfaced additional conversations that needed to happen and revealed gaps in information that had to be filled before we could move forward. Most importantly, it aligned the execution with the impact the executive actually wanted to make.

Taking time to ask these questions prevented misaligned decisions, saved hours of rework, and ensured the program would drive meaningful results.

ASK THIS BEFORE YOU BUILD

Whether you are refining an onboarding process, launching a new client experience, or introducing a development program for your team, stop and ask:

  • What is the desired outcome?
  • What result do I actually want this initiative to create?

If you are leading others through a change, extend the question to your team:

  • What outcomes do we want to achieve together?
  • What will success look like?

The clearer you are on the outcome, the easier it is to build something that actually works. This level of clarity helps you avoid costly rework and keeps your team focused on what truly matters.

Progress Isn’t Always Forward Motion

Slowing down is not about losing momentum. It is about making sure your momentum is headed in the right direction.

If you are a high-performing leader or business owner navigating growth, you don’t need more hustle. You need smart, strategic execution that is aligned with where you want to go.
