Goal Achievement

Will You Be Proud of Your Goals a Year from Now?

Setting meaningful goals is one of the most powerful ways to give your life direction and achieve a sense of pride in yourself. As we close out the year, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. Therefore, a question to consider during this time is – a year from now, will I be proud of the goals I set today?

If you’re ready to make 2025 your most successful year yet, let’s explore how you can set impactful, achievable goals through my proven four-step process: visioning, reflecting, brainstorming, and planning.

And if you want to go even deeper, my Goal Setting Success Course is here to guide you every step of the way with tools and resources to help you set and achieve your goals. Let’s dive in!

The Power of Goals: Why They Lead to Pride

A goal is more than just another item on your to-do list — goals give your life direction, purpose, and a sense of progress. Think back to a moment when you achieved something truly meaningful. Wasn’t there a sense of pride knowing that you worked hard and accomplished what you set out to? That moment likely started with a clear, purposeful goal.

However, not all goals are created equal. Goals that align with your vision and values will leave you feeling fulfilled, while goals based on external expectations can leave you feeling empty. Worse yet, the absence of goals often leads to stagnation and dissatisfaction.

Setting these meaningful goals starts with a foundation of visioning. Let’s take a closer look.

Step 1: Visioning – The Foundation of Goal Setting

Think of your vision as your ultimate destination. It’s the big picture of what you want your life to look like, and your yearly goals serve as the milestones along the way. Visioning can be broken down into three categories:

  1. Personal – the life you want to live.
  2. Professional – the future you want for your career or business.
  3. Public – the message you share with others, such as clients or your team.

If writing a vision feels overwhelming, remember that it’s a draft that evolves as you grow. To start, set a timer for 15 minutes, grab a notebook, and just start writing whatever comes to your mind. Don’t overthink it – the key is to let your ideas flow.

If you’d like step-by-step guidance on crafting a clear, actionable vision, my Goal Setting Success Course includes detailed exercises to help you get started.

Step 2: Reflecting on the Past Year

Reflection is a powerful tool for understanding where you’ve been and how to move forward. Conducting a SPOT analysis will guide your reflection process by helping you identify:

  1. Strengths – areas where you excel.
  2. Problems – challenges to solve to move you closer to your goals.
  3. Opportunities – external factors that could propel your success.
  4. Threats – potential roadblocks that require you to pivot.

In addition to conducting a SPOT analysis, ask yourself the following reflection questions:

  1. What did I accomplish this year, and why? – this question helps build confidence.
  2. What did I want to accomplish this year, but didn’t? – this question encourages you to be fully honest with yourself and helps identify misaligned goals or gaps in planning.
  3. What do I want more of in the new year? What do I want less of? – these questions set the stage for the next step of setting meaningful goals, brainstorming.

Step 3: Brainstorming Strategic Goals You’ll Actually Achieve

Once you’ve reflected, it’s time to dream big. Brainstorm goals in key areas of your life, such as personal, professional, financial, and health. This is your opportunity to get creative and think without judgment.

After brainstorming, narrow your focus by rating each goal on a scale of 1 to 5 for excitement and alignment with your vision. Choose the goals that truly inspire and challenge you.

To ensure your goals are well-defined, use my following “goal check” framework:

  1. Meaningful – does the goal connect to your vision and inspire you emotionally?
  2. Doable – is the goal realistic given your current circumstances?
  3. Measurable – can you quantify what successfully working towards, or achieving, the goal looks like (i.e. how much, how often, by when)?
  4. Specific – is the goal clearly defined?

For example, instead of setting a vague goal like “Grow my business,” aim for something like “Acquire 15 new clients in Q1 by focusing on lead generation strategies.”

Step 4: Planning for Success

Planning bridges the gap between dreaming and achieving. A goal without a plan is just a wish. So, here’s how to create an actionable plan for your goals:

  1. Identify three strategies for each goal in the following categories:
    1. Exciting – a strategy that energizes you.
    2. Fundamental – a proven activity that is critical to success.
    3. Scary – a bold action that requires courage.
  1.  Determine how you will track your progress:
    1. Weekly check-ins such as The Friday Ritual.
    2. Monthly reviews such as the Month-End Goal Review.
    3. Quarterly reflections such as The Quarterly Review.
  1. Allocate time and resources:
    1. Identify the investments you need to make, whether it’s time, money, or both.
  1. Stay accountable:
    1. Share your plan with an accountability partner or coach.
    2. Join a mastermind group that checks in regularly.

Planning eliminates ambiguity, provides clarity, and ensures you’re prioritizing what truly matters. For even more tools and strategies, the Goal Setting Success Course offers detailed planning templates and resources.
